Dona Electronic Plate Breaks the £1,000 barrier !!!

Last week saw us break the £1,000 barrier in offertory donations via the DONA machines in our churches since the launch on the 14th February 2026. £700 of the figure was Gift Aided allowing us to claim a further £175.

The figure excludes donations made to CAFOD, Mary’s Meals, St Patricks Easter raffle and Piety purchases.

Thank you so much for supporting and embracing this method of donation.

The event will be held at St Patrick’s Parish House , offering a lovely chance to gather as a community, share homemade treats, and support parish activities.

Houghton Weavers: Saturday 7th March 2026, 7.30pm

A special fundraising concert featuring the much‑loved Houghton Weavers will take place on Saturday 7th March 2026 at 7.30pm, supporting children and family groups preparing to travel to Lourdes in July 2026.

The event will be held at Littleborough Cricket Club on Calderbrook Road (OL15 9LD), offering an evening of live music, community spirit, and support for a meaningful cause.

Tickets are priced at £12.00, with an optional supper available for £6.75 for those who’d like to make a full night of it.

New Digital Donation Box Set to Launch in February 2026

A new Digital Donation Box is being introduced to make giving simpler and more accessible for parishioners and visitors.

The system allows donations to be made electronically, meaning no cash is needed and supporters can contribute quickly and easily using card or contactless payment. For those who are UK taxpayers, Gift Aid can be added at the point of donation, allowing contributions to go even further at no extra cost to the donor.

The Digital Donation Box will also enable churches to take electronic payments for a range of purposes, including Piety Stall purchases and specific parish appeals, offering greater flexibility and convenience.

Further information will be shared after the Masses on 31st January and 1st February. The official launch is planned for the weekend of 14th and 15th February , when the new system will be available for use.

Relics of St Carlo Acutis to Visit Diocese of Salford

In January, the relics of St Carlo Acutis will be hosted at two of Salford Diocese churches over five days, during which time the Diocese will welcome schools, parishioners and people from all over for veneration.

Carlo is the first millennial saint, and is celebrated for his profound faith and his use of the internet to log Eucharistic miracles from around the world. He was passionate about spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church up until his death from leukemia at the age of 15.

The relics will be presented at St Mary’s Church, Burnley from 28-29 January 2026 before they travel to St Patrick’s Church, Collyhurst from 30 January to 1 February 2026 . More information will be shared soon with parishes and on the Diocesan website and social media channels.

We are currently in the process of joining the bank accounts of St Mary’s & St Patrick's together.

This means that parishioners of St Mary’s who pay by standing order, will need to advise there bank of the new details.

Derek Conway will be in church this Sunday (14 December), and will provide details via letter.

St Patrick's standing order payers, are unaffected as it’s this bank account we are using for the consolidation.

Happy Birthday Fr. Robert

On November 2nd, both churches in the parish of Pope St John XXIII worked together to organise a celebration for the 70th birthday of Father Lasia.

Parishioners from both churches came together in Littleborough Cricket Club for his birthday celebration.

When Father Lasia arrived, he was greeted by everyone singing “For he’s a jolly good fellow - and so say all of us.”

The gathering was a complete surprise for Father Lasia.

Food was served during the evening, followed by entertainment from Jimmy Cricket, and songs from Jimmy’s wife May.

A special thank you speech was given by Father Lasia, who had really enjoyed his unexpected birthday celebration.

Birthday cake was distributed to everyone at the end of the evening.

Pilgrimage 2026: Rome, San Giovanni and Assisi

This is a 10 day Pilgrimage from 12 October - 21 October 2026, flying from Manchester to Rome, spending three nights half board in each venue.

This will be a wonderful pilgrimage - visiting the most famous places in Rome - including the weekly Papal Audience where you can see our new Pope Leo XIV. Then of course San Giovanni is the birthplace of St Padre Pio and there is so much to see there and then on to the Umbrian Hills to the town of Assisi - one of the most popular, but most peaceful Pilgrim Sites - dedicated of course to St. Francis.

We are delighted to share the joyful news that Carlo Acutis, the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint, will be canonized on 7 September 2025. Carlo, an inspiring Italian teenager who passed away in 2006 at the age of 15, was renowned for using his technological talents to spread faith most notably by creating a website documenting Eucharistic miracles around the world. To mark this historic event, our parish warmly invites all young people from St Patrick’s and St Mary’s who have been Confirmed within the last four years to join us at the 9.30am Mass. This will be a youth-led celebration with the music, readings and bidding prayers to be chosen and led by our recently Confirmed members. At the conclusion of Mass, each will receive a special certificate and a small keepsake in remembrance of Carlo’s remarkable life and legacy will be given to all young people. Let us come together as a parish family to honour this inspiring new saint and encourage our young people to follow in his footsteps. All are welcome.

Preparation for Reconciliation

For children not attending our schools (Alice Ingham, St Mary's or St Patrick's), and for any young people and adults wishing to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist, preparation classes will be held on:

16th March
23rd March
30th March, and
6th April

These will run in church and the Parish House immediately after the 9.30am Mass.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be Tuesday 8th April.

The next course runs in February: Monday 3rd and Monday 10th.

Parents are expected to attend both sessions, which will be held in St Mary’s church at 7 pm.

If you have already filled in an application for baptism you should already have received an invitation to attend. There is still time to join this course. Please introduce yourself to Father Robert and ask for the application form.

Calling all hymn choices!!!!!

For a Sunday morning 9.30am Mass at St Patrick's, hymns usually form part of the liturgy.

The church has a rota between three musician groups. It is hoped the music played compliments the Mass and brings further spiritual enrichment and uplift to a Sunday morning service.

The musicians who play in the different groups appreciate the congregation getting heartily involved through the singing of the hymns selected for the Mass.

Although hymns are chosen to relate to the liturgy of the day, if any parishioner has a favourite hymn? Or has a hymn they think has not been played in a while? Please can they get in contact with Kate at the Parish office. The musicians will attempt to include this hymn when they appropriately can during one of the future Sunday services.

In the meantime keep up the great singing!

The Choir of St Mary's at the Carole Concert on 17th December 2024

The Carol Service at St. Mary's Church took place on 17 December 2024 . The choir sat on one side of the altar, men wearing suits and bow ties, ladies wearing red. Candles were lit on the altar in between the hymns to pray for special intentions.

The hymns included:

The good news is that the UK government has extended the ban on puberty blockers for under-18s indefinitely, acknowledging the "unacceptable safety risks" highlighted by independent experts.

Existing patients will continue to receive them but no new under 18 patients can be prescribed these drugs.

While this is a crucial step forward, clinical trials on under 18s using these dangerous drugs are still planned for January

Our Annual Parish Carol Service will take place in St. Mary’s Church on Tuesday 17th December at 7pm . There will be readings , carols and prayers to help us focus on the true meaning of Christmas during this busy time.

Parish website feedback

During the summer, we asked parishioners for their feedback and views on the parish website, along with any suggestions of how it could be more proactive and relevant. Thank you to the people who took the time to share comments, and in total we received 25 responses.

There were some common themes emerging, in particular that the website has the potential to highlight everything the parish has to offer, yet for it to be relevant it needs to be updated regularly and should include the latest information. We share those feelings and this is where we need your help. There is lots that goes on in the parish that we want to promote and celebrate, plus many activities and events that take place which we could share details of. For this to work as best as possible, we need you’re your contributions. This could be in the form of advertising upcoming events, sharing details of what has recently happened in a parish group or adding to the basic information of our parish.

In order to make this as easily as possible, we have created a new page where you can submit website content. This allows anyone in the parish to send an article or provide an update on what is happening. Unlike the newsletter, we are not restricted to word counts (within reason!) and we can include photos or even videos. Once contributions are received, the content will be reviewed and uploaded accordingly. Any articles will then be published and shared by email as part of the weekly newsletter. We hope by creating this avenue, we reach as many contributors as possible.

It’s now over to you - all these details, plus a link on how to add content/upload, went out with the parish newsletter earlier this week. Fear not, if you don’t want to use this option, email is always available, or indeed a simple word with Kate!

Update on our Diocesan Synod

Following on from the first gathering of the diocesan journey, we are now able to share the ‘Big Listen’ Report. This report shares the responses and themes identified from the diocesan wide listening exercise. You can access the full report via the diocesan website and the QR code below.

The four principal themes that emerged from the Big Listen stage of the process, which took place between October 2023 and January 2024 are: Nurturing Faith in Tomorrow's World , Building Connections , Enabling Access , and Fostering Christ-like Care .

As well as the full report, four summary leaflets and other related resources will be made available in monthly stages on a theme by theme basis, starting in September with Theme One: Faith in tomorrow’s world. You will be able to access these via the same links.

On St Patrick’s Day they met again in the parish room at St Patrick’s to share a meal and their recollections of the day.

Have a lovely prayerful start to the final week of Advent by taking part in our Parish Carol Service.

There will be a selection of Readings, we will light candles as we pray for so many needed intentions, and then sing a beautiful selection of carols to lift your spirits.

After the carol service, everyone is invited into the Parish Centre for a glass of mulled wine or a soft drink and a mince pie. More than that it is a great opportunity to catch up with friends old and new, and wish them all the joys of his Holy Season.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU!

We are very grateful for all your support in holding this event, which was a huge success. We could not have a achieved it without your generous donations, the time given pricing goods, baking, knitting, sewing, flower arranging, setting up or running a stall on the day, and clearing up.

We were tremendously supported by staff of St Patrick’s school and their wonderful PTA, who spent hours preparing for Father Christmas, setting up a toy stall and a chocolate tombola, cooking food and generally overcoming all the unexpected obstacles that crop up along the way, so a very big thank you to them too.

AFTER COSTS, WE MADE £2700 PROFIT, WHICH WILL BE SHARED BETWEEN ST MARY’S AND ST PATRICK’S.

Pope Francis has called a Universal Synod which is taking place in every Catholic diocese across the world. The Synod is themed: “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission” . Journeying Together

In Bishop John's Pastoral Letter marking the first Sunday of Advent, he launches the Diocesan Stage of the Universal Synod called by Pope Francis, entitled ‘For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission. Bishop John explains:

"A Synod is not a debating event where people bring their arguments and opinions in order to win a discussion. A Synod is a prayerful journey of listening to what the Holy Spirit may be saying to the Church at this time so that we may live the Gospel values and continue the mission of Christ in our own times, with the present needs and opportunities. We are all invited by Pope Francis to take part. Indeed the very word Synod means on a journey TOGETHER. It is important that in our Diocese we listen to each other, we listen to the voices of those not in the church pews, and together we listen to the Word of God which has been handed down to us.

In our Diocese this can be the first step in a longer and deeper listening journey to help us shape the Diocese for the future, building on the work of Hope in the Future and other positive initiatives. In this journey it is important that we hear from people who have drifted from the Church and feel that the Church does not offer them the assistance that they need or is not fulfilling its mission as they understand it. We will need to listen to those on the margins of the Church or of society and those who feel excluded from either. It will be important to hear, also, from people of other traditions about how they perceive the Church."

Parishioners from Pope St John XXIII, joined our own Sr Anna in the splendid Norwich Cathedral on the occasion of her Solemn Profession to the Divine Sisters of Charity, on Saturday 28th August.

The service was conducted by the Rt Revd Alan Hopes, Bishop of East Anglia, and included a renewal of vows by Golden Jubilarians and the Renewal of Temporary Vows for members of the Divine Sisters. Bishop Alan addressed the sisters present, both in the Cathedral and virtually from around the world, with the following:

‘By making these vows, your sister Anna, has bound herself not only with God but also with this religious family, which is joined in a common vocation, common prayer and common life. The love of Christ gathers you from different parts of the world and gives you one heart and one soul. Receive this Sister into your community and surround her with sincere love, so that you may all be one, like the Father in the Son and the Son in the Father, so that you may be perfect in love.’

We are blessed to have Sr Anna and Sr Linda in our community, they have brought great energy to the prayer life of the churches in our parish. The Bishops words apply to us as a parish, as much as to the sisters in the order of Divine Charity. Please keep both Sr Anna and Sr Linda in your prayers as they carry out their work, bringing the joy of the Gospel to our parish, our town and the wider community of Salford Diocese.

New church window needed at St. Mary's

At the moment we are in the process of replacing one of the church’s windows which has seriously deteriorated over the years. This is a necessary intervention and one that we can no longer ignore or postpone.

Unfortunately such replacements are expensive and the quote that we have received, and accepted, is in the region of £7000. To this end we will be initiating a Church Window Fund and there will be a box at the back of church for donations towards this. Other forms of fund raising will be discussed with the Finance Committee but any suggestions regarding fund raising will be gladly received. The Finance Committee will aim to meet the middle of September so any suggestions received by then will be discussed at the meeting. I am sure that parishioners will respond generously to this.

Easing of restrictions for church attendance

The relaxation of restrictions has to be done on a local level, and the North West has a high level of infection. Consequently the Bishop has asked us to move cautiously, as we ease restrictions as follows:

The Sunday obligation will continue to be suspended until the First Sunday in Advent.
Masks are not obligatory, but are recommended in church
Standing/kneeling is now permitted
We would ask people to socially distance, as best they can to protect the vulnerable and to ensure that everyone coming into church feels safe.
We would, for the time being, like to keep the system of receiving Holy Communion via the central aisle, and returning to your seat via the most appropriate side aisle.
Holy Communion will continue to be given under one kind
There is no sign of the peace
Numbers for baptisms and funerals have increased from 30, but within reason, so that we can ensure safety for all.
Only one child can be baptised at a time (unless they are from the same family)
The Bishop has advised that congregational singing is not appropriate at this time.

During this period of pandemic, our children have continued to meet each week on Zoom to listen to the Gospel of the day, reflect on the message and share ideas on how they might be the person of Jesus, and live out the Gospel in their daily lives.

During Lent, they pledged to raise money for CAFOD’s Walk for Water and raised £380. Thank you to the families who took part in this very special event.

He has Risen, Alleluia!

Lent began six weeks ago in the loneliness and harshness of a wilderness but will end gloriously on Easter Sunday in the garden in which the tomb is located. The stone rolled away and the most significant event in the history of the world has taken place. Jesus, our Crucified Saviour, has risen. He is alive and glorious and now offers his resurrection to all those who accept him into their lives.

Our Lent has been a strange one as we have been surrounded by restrictions and guidelines and directives, all designed to keep us safe from Covid. These are now slowly easing and we see our celebration of Easter as one filled with hope and faith in what lies ahead; a return to a fuller and more normal life. But we have the added dimension of the faith and hope in the salvation won for us by Jesus Christ who has destroyed the restrictions caused by sin and the devil and promises us fullness of life lived in Him.

May I wish you all a very happy and holy Easter. Christ is risen. Alleluia!!

A huge thank you to everyone who gave donations of money, cards, chocolates and various food items towards our Easter outreach to many local Care Homes, Rochdale and Smallbridge Foodbanks and shielding parishioners. Special thanks to staff and children at St Mary’s primary who made such a tremendous effort to help with cards and gifts.

The Pastoral Care Group Christmas Bonanza

On 19th December 2020 the Pastoral Care Group held a Zoom celebration in place of their annual over 70's New Year Dinner. Over 20 participants logged on to watch the video our children and musicians of the Parish had put together. We held a raffle with two of our lovely participants winning a pamper hamper and food hamper, which were safely delivered to their doorsteps after the Zoom celebration. Afterwards we set up some breakout rooms which allowed participants to chat together in smaller groups. It was lovely to see and hear everyone and have the opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas.

Amalgamation of our two parishes

We have received notification this week from the Diocese that the amalgamation of our two parishes has now formally been approved and we are now the parish of Pope St John XXIII .

Both churches will retain their former names. We will now be able to work together in earnest to form one community under the patronage of Pope St John. I will keep you informed as to the next steps that we need to take to carry this through. We will celebrate this fittingly when we are able.

Pause to church services

The Bishops Conference has now informed us that from midnight on Wednesday 4 November 2020 , all public Services in churches must cease. This means that we can no longer celebrate public Masses during the month of November. However, we are able to open our churches for private prayer.

Our prayer will be for the end of the pandemic, and during this month of November, as well as remembering our own faithful departed, we will also pray for all those who have lost their lives to this virus. With faith in God, our prayer is that we will be able to come together again in December, and celebrate Mass as a community once again. The times for private prayer are as follows:

St. Patrick’s

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 10 am to 11 am

St. Mary’s

Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10am to 11 am

Sunday 11.15 am to 12 noon

During private prayer there will be normally be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

To make sure that there is adequate ventilation in church, the doors and fire exits remain open throughout prayer sessions so if the weather is cold, please wrap up warmly!

On Saturday 5 December there will be foodbank and Petrus collections as follows:

10 am to 12 noon in St Mary's Church Car park
St Patrick's Car Park after the 12 noon Mass (approx. 12.30 pm)

In addition to the usual staples , we are also asking for Christmas foods.

On that morning we are also collecting:

Hats, gloves, scarves for Petrus (new items please). If anyone needs wool for knitting them let Helen know.
Toys or games for children and teenagers (new items please).

Let us make sure that Christmas is a celebration for the most needy in our communities. Let us care and share that they might know that Christ loves them through us.

New members welcome to the Rosary Group

The Rosary Group started in St Mary's in January 2017. It has met on virtually every Wednesday at 7:00 pm ever since. We have missed a few Wednesdays when it clashed with an evening Holy Day of Obligation mass or Christmas Day!

When lockdown started, we switched to Zoom. Unfortunately, we lost some members due to the change of venue. However, we have also gained new members. We have 9 regular members from both Saint Mary’s and Saint Patrick’s. We have our own email address stmarysr90@gmail.com which is used to send out Zoom Meeting Invite on Tuesday. Zoom is easy to use from a phone, tablet, laptop or PC.

We start with a brief contemplation or meditation followed by the Magnificat. We then do 5 decades of the rosary and then there is an opportunity for members to request prayers for people in need. We then close with a prayer of thanksgiving and a blessing.

To begin with, on Sunday 18 October, there will be the morning Mass only, at the usual time of 9.30 am. This is in addition to our other Masses:

Tuesday 10 am
Thursday 7 pm
Saturday 12 noon

If you are thinking of joining us for the first time, you might like to know we adhere to the following guidelines to keep everyone safe:

Upon entry, everyone should wear a mask (and leave it on throughout Mass), supply their name and telephone number for track and trace purposes and sanitize their hands.
Parishioners will be directed to a seat by a steward, Once in your place please stay there and do not move around the church. Bench surfaces are sanitized at the end of each service.
Singing is not allowed at present and there will be no Sign of Peace.
A steward will direct you when it is your turn to receive Communion. This will be in the hand only and only under one kind. Communion is given/received in silence, preserving distance between the priest, yourself and the next communicant. Please ensure that you return to your place after Communion and do not sit elsewhere.
A basket for the collection of offertory envelopes, donations, Mass intentions and sanctuary lamps will be available at the back of church as you leave. Plain envelopes should be marked clearly for their intended purpose.
The sacristy will be out of bounds for the present time. If you wish to speak to Fr Robert after Mass please notify a steward who will inform him and he will come out to you.
The toilet in the church is closed for the time being.
Sanitizer is available as you leave.
Please leave the church immediately after Mass, and do not cluster with others either in church or in the car park.
For the foreseeable future there will be no altar servers, no Eucharistic Ministers, no Offertory procession, no Bidding Prayers, no readers and no children’s liturgy.

Please note that the Sunday obligation to attend Mass is still suspended.

If you are able to attend Mass during the week instead of Sunday, it would be most helpful. That way we can leave the available space in church on Sundays for those who can only attend on that day.

To make sure that there is adequate ventilation in church, the doors and fire exits remain open throughout Mass so if the weather is cold, please wrap up warmly!

Welcome to our new parish website

A very warm welcome to all to the new website for the parish community of St. Patrick ‘s, Rochdale and St. Mary’s, Littleborough. We are two parishes who are preparing to come together as one community. This website has been put together by members of the two parishes and the Hope in the Future Leads and continues to be a work in progress.

Our website has come into being so that the enquirer can at a glance see what this community has to offer to help bring the love of God and his Son Jesus Christ into the lives of the people around us. This we hope to achieve by advertising our Church Services, pastoral initiatives by the different groups active in the community, what is happening in our three primary schools and also social events when they are allowed to resume. Everyone is free to help by contributing to this website and to the life of this community.

Our aim is to become an active community of committed Catholic Christians working in harmony to enrich the wider community and our own lives by living out the teachings of the Gospel.

Welcome and thank you for taking the time to visit the new parish website. Over the last few weeks, the Hope in the Future team, with support from Fr. Robert, have set up a new website for the parish.

The website is designed to improve communication between the church and it's parishioners. This is especially important as the parish is merging two churches together and at a time when we can't meet as we usually would.
